Portobello Express (fan profile)
The purchase of this song goes into a charity project. This guys are genuine as the music they compose and they have an heart of gold. Please support good music and good people!
This is our first cover song, the original being written by the wonderful Gozer Goodspeed (gozergoodspeed.bandcamp.com). Along with his record label, Lights & Lines, he held a competition to cover this song and as we all thought the original was rather spiffing, we figured we'd have a go. Paul came up with an arrangement very quickly and after that it was just a case of us recording all our parts (and then re-recording them when Paul told us we left out quite a bit of F, arguably his favourite chord).
Alas, we didn't win the competition but we got a great recording out of it, and somehow we put it together rather quickly (and yet we're still only half way through recording our album after a whole year working on it!)
As we're a bit dim and don't know anything about managing/splitting royalties, we figured the easiest thing to do was just give the song away for free so with Gozer's permission, if you want a copy go ahead and download it. Feel no guilt, just grab a copy and rock out! And also pay a visit to Gozer's bandcamp page (mentioned above) and also the Lights & Lines page: lightsandlines.bandcamp.com.
lyrics
Fortune smile at me
I could be good if I could run free and
Favoured winds, blow my way
Cigarette ends in an old ashtray
And make it please, this gambler's last day
Lady luck, fickle but fair
Strip away all these debts we wear
Wash us clean with one freak wave
Clutching tight what we need to keep safe
And make it please, this gambler's last day
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man, make me a better man
Fate please come to my aid
Don't judge me by mistakes I've made
You bet your house, you bet your bread
I don't want to just end up dead
So make it please, this gambler's last day
I had a friend who put it all on black
Found him at the bottom of a river in a sack
I was at his house just that day
Cigarette ends in an old ashtray
So make it please, this gambler's last day
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man, make me a better man
Fortune please
Come smile at me
Don't go away
Like you did to the gambler that day
To the gambler that day
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man built to last
Ghosts of the future and past, make me a better man, make me a better man
Fortune please
Come smile at me
Don't go away
Just make it please
So fortune please
Come smile at me
Don't go away
Like you did to the gambler that day
To the gambler that day

Storm of Crows is a rock band based in Sheffield and Stockport, in the UK. Originally in various bands at the end of the
1990s, we reformed during Covid lockdown in 2020 to record some of our old songs, and write a few new ones as well. We're not the best band in the world, but we're having a blast doing what what we're doing, and we think that comes across in our music. We hope you like it too....more
This album should be the soundtrack to life. I was stuck in traffic when I realised (that makes it sound bad. It isn't!) but everything just seemed right, watching the world go by with this playing. Storm of Crows
Black Cart are one of my absolute favourite indie bands. Incredible rock delivered by Ray's awesome guitar, stunning vocal from Les, and beautiful keys from John, this is definitely one to not miss! Storm of Crows
It might be short, but what Portobello Express have packed into this album is nothing short of wonderful. Crank it up loud and give it a listen. Then play it on repeat again and again! Storm of Crows
